  1. That said, I really adore Several Shades of Why. It's quieter tone doesn't change the essential ability of J to set an emotional mood through repetition and serious guitar work. I would still give More Light the top spot for a solo album, but I'd make a strong argument that Several Shades of Why beats Farm, a fine album in it's own right /5(58).

Mascis wraps up the album with a climactic finish in "What Happened" which seems to be the tale of a former friend or relative being recognized in the form of another person, as if the original person was never really lost. Mascis has dabbled in acoustic music in the past, most notably on his album Martin + Me (Martin being his acoustic guitar). But Several Shades of Why is easily his most accomplished and best-crafted acoustic album to date, as well as one of his most tightly focused collections in years.
